Metaphoric language is a vital component of literature. Metaphors are so crucial, such that no piece of literature lacking them would be complete. Tom Robbins’ Half Asleep in Frog Pajamas is a quintessential example of how metaphors play such vital roles in literature, because the story is entirely developed using the metaphors it contains. There are some very significant reasons for the use of metaphors throughout most literature. Metaphors provide graphic images that humans can easily adapt to and they also help them understand relatively abstract and intangible notions in the piece in a more concrete manner. Metaphors provide this understanding by creating a similarity between two items or ideas that one can clearly imagine and relate to. However, one of the most important roles of the metaphor is to help the reader capture the theme of the piece with as little difficulty as possible. They will also prevent the readers from having to search for meaning and understanding once the actual themes are found.
