When this story was written, things were much different in the world. Any time women displayed deviant behavior, they were said to have a "nervous condition" referred to doctors as hysteria. This hysteria never really took on a true definition, but women were just biologically different then men and this hysteria was a part of that biogical difference. The most common treatment for this "hysteria" was known as the rest cure.
