Rugby requires a mixture of both health related and skill related components of fitness. It requires a vast number of the health related components of fitness. Strength is vital to the rugby player. Maximum strength is required for a player who is going to perform a tackle where they need to put their whole body behind it and successfully tackle the opponent. It is also needed for the player holding the ball who needs to use all his strength to get past the opponent without them successfully tackling him. Elastic strength is needed for wingers as they only have a short period of time to gain as much ground as possible and elastic strength gives them this quick burst of energy needed. When the team is under sustained pressure, the forwards will need strength endurance, as they will be repeatedly making tackles and need to be ready and unfatigued for the next tackle.
