If this is not exhorting, in 2001 a survey of Paralegals in UK and US Law Firms in London was conducted by Taylor & Root Global Legal Recruitment (supported by the ‘British’ Lawyer magazine), which indicated that US firms pay on average 15% more than UK firms at 6-12 months and 4 years plus experience, well, this may not be too encouraging for some. ... I find that within the US, Paralegals are fairly restricted in the practice of law, but to the contrary, the position is somewhat different within the UK. Certainly, there is no such thing (as there is in America) as the Unauthorized Practice of Law (UPL). ... Ironically you may ask who regulates the Paralegal profession and quite frankly, there is not a single body that does, for example within the UK the Courts do not get involved in such matters of regulation, neither do they investigate complaints and conduct of UK Lawyers (contrasting the position with State Supreme Courts within the US).
This aspect is governed by self-regulating professional bodies, for Barristers this is The General Council of the Bar, or The Bar Council as it is commonly termed, for Solicitors, this is The Law Society of England and Wales, and for Legal Executives this is The Institute for Legal Executives. The Paralegal profession is not governed or regulated as such by any such body or statute, having said this, Paralegals can become members of The National Association of Paralegals, after obtaining their qualifications, which are comparable in rank to the US Paralegal, graduating from an ABA law program.
