Before the two brothers mother died, the older brother made a promise to his dying mother to always watch out for Sonny. ... This being caused because he does not want pain like what Sonny is experiencing to become involved in his life. Not until the older brother encounters pain himself somewhat similar to what Sonny has experienced, can the older brother allow himself to cross paths with Sonny. When the older brother looses his daughter to polio, he reaches out to the only person of whom he knows that might be able to understand the kind of pain and anguish he is experiencing, this being Sonny.
