Summary of the Origins of World War 1

After almost 90 years, the question of whom or what really started the First World War in 1914 is still unknown. There are many speculations into what may have happened, but only those who experienced the war at that time, really will ever know what caused this conflict to breakout. In, The Origins of the First World War; Part 1: The Outbreak of War, by Gordon Martel, he gives the reader some insight into what may have caused European nations to go to war in 1914, and who is really to blame for the outbreak. In the summer of 1914, while on a visit to Sarajevo, “the heir to the throne of the Habsburg monarchy”(Martel, Origins, p.1), Franz Ferdinand and his wife, are assassinated in their car, upon appearing in front of the Bosnian people. Many believed that the death of the Archduke lead to the commencement of the First World War in European history. ... ”(Martel, Origins, p. ... At 11 am, on July 28, five days upon presenting the ultimatum to the Serbians, Austria-Hungary declares war on Serbia. Upon hearing of this, Russia, being allied with Serbia, decides that it too will mobilize its troops, but only into territory that would allow her to go to war with 2 Austria-Hungary.
