METHO DRINKER Under the death of winter’s leaves he lies who cried to Nothing and the terrible night to be his home and bread. ... It was for Death he took her; death is but this; and yet he is uneasy under her kiss and winces from that acid of her desire As can be understood from the poem, it tells about the hopelessness of being homeless. ... The name “Metho Drinker” is given to the poem, as it tells of a man who takes metholated spirits to warm his body, numb his mind and block out the pain of his reality. ... The poem makes reference to the man feeling “safe” in the house of Nothing. ... In a similar way that we today experience comfort in sharing our happiness, our pain and our sorrow with a partner, the man in the poem shares his pain and sorrow with his “woman of fire”. ... When the poem reads “he will lie warm until the bone is bare” on line 14, it is meant that until the alcohol wears off he will feel warm and calm in his intoxicated state, however, after a certain period of time the alcohols effects would have worn off and the mans “woman of fire” would therefore have disappeared too. ... This is mentioned in the poem on line 15 “and on a dead dark moon he wakes alone”. ... Upon closer inspection of the form in which the poem “Metho Drinker” has been written, it is feasible to argue that it resembles more closely a free verse poem than any other form. This can be gathered when the length of the poem is taken into consideration as “Metho Drinker” consists of 18 lines and 2 stanzas. |
