The recent negative press that the advertising industry has received is both unfounded and unmerited. The media simply fails to recognize the positive benefits that advertising can bring to the individual consumer and society as a whole. Although some claim that advertising is deceptive and at the heart of socially irresponsible materialism, many of those critics are unaware that the quality of life we enjoy today could not exist without advertising. Advertising keeps the consumer price of media from skyrocketing, and the demand that advertising creates keeps government programs afloat through increased tax revenues. ... I would assert that most critics are more upset with some current advertising techniques, which they feel misinform consumers, than the notion of advertising as a whole. ... We also adhere to the self-regulating Code of Advertising adopted by the Council of Better Business Bureaus which receives consumer complaints regarding immoral advertising.
