... That man, a Bavarian immigrant, is Loeb Strauss, better known by us as Levi Strauss. Born on February 26, 1829 in Buttenheim, Bavaria, Levi Strauss soon lost his mother and then in 1845 he lost his father. Levi’s two older brothers, already living in the states and running their own dry goods business in New York, were joined by Levi and his three sisters. Levi stayed in New York for two days and then moved to Louisville, KY where he lived with his uncle and worked on his uncle’s ranch. ... However, Levi was more interested in being an independent businessman. ... In January of 1853 Levi finally gained his American citizenship.
