Poetry Commentary: “An Invite To Eternity” – John Clare John Clare’s An Invite To Eternity is a portrayal of one’s lonesome journey into a surreal world of confusion, and the human yearning for companionship. This yearning, however, is troubled by doubt; for accepting an Invite To Eternity requires resolute commitment and trust. ... The non-identity theme relates back to the very title of the poem: “An Invite To Eternity” (Eternity being as vague a concept as ever there was one). ... The reader may be led to believe that this “state” is simply death, and therefore that “An Invite To Eternity” is an invitation to share death, and love in death. ... Say maiden can thy life be led To join the living with the dead Then trace thy footsteps on with me We’re wed to one eternity If I were to apply a scenario, a context to this poem, I would devise something of the sort: A personage foresees his imminent death (e. ... Therefore he writes her “An Invite To Eternity” in the hope that it will induce her to be true to their love until she may join him in the eternal life; the life after death. ... This sense of loss is present in many of his poems, “An Invite To Eternity” proves to be no exception. However, it is interesting that Clare chose to end his poem of obscurity, desperation and confusion with a matter-of-fact statement: “We’re wed to one eternity”.
