In Shakespeare’s play, “Measure for Measure”, one of the main characters, the Duke of Vienna, Vincentio, takes on the disguise of a friar for many reasons. ... However, unwittingly, the Duke goes on his own journey or self-discovery. In this essay, I shall be examining the way in which Shakespeare uses the convention of disguise to reveal the truth about the Duke and other characters in the play, and also the real state of Vienna. There are also many other issues surrounding the Duke’s disguise, which he takes on, such as Shakespeare’s use of a religious character and also the themes of power and control and the way in which this is sustained.
