Nigeria Nigerian Government Yesterday and Today The Nigerian Flag The color white on the Nigerian flag shows Peace. The color green on the Nigerian flag shows Agriculture. Coat Of Arms Nigeria’s coat of arms is an emblem, which shows the unity of the country and stands for authority and power. The Eagle represents the strength of Nigeria The black shield represents the good soil of Nigeria. The horses represent the dignity of Nigeria. The mark on the shield represents the rivers Niger and Benue joining together. Government • Nigeria was under British rule and got its independence on October the 1st 1960, when Princess Alexandra of Great Britain solemnly handed over the relevant documents to Sir Abubakar Tafawa Balewa, the federal prime minister. • In 1966 there was a civil war in Nigeria. The civil war came to an end in 1970. The military took control by then. • In 1975 Murtala Mohammed became the head of state, but he didn’t last for long. He was assassinated by a coup attempt but his administration remained in power.
