my name is yervant some more things to consider…. the british reaction to the painting being much more well received than in france, which highlighted the rivalry between the two countries, especially considering the alceste situation in Britain, and how everyone survived*** Art is understood to be a product of the social, historical and political context in which it is created. This being the case how does one identify and explain the combination of these ingredients which combined to form Theodore Gericault’s, Raft of the Medusa, oil on canvas, 491 cm x 716 cm, exhibited for the first time in Paris, at the Salon of 1819. The transitory nature of Gericault and his work, especially the Raft of the Medusa can be noted in his incorporation of the Classical style, the Renaissance, and past masters, as well as the controversial responses he received at the time of the work’s exhibition.
