Comparison of today’s society and the novel, The Handmaids Tale, by Margaret Atwood. In the novel, The Handmaids Tale, by Margaret Atwood, the reader get to follow the handmaid Offred, living in a frantic society full of laws and regulations, controlled by the state of the city Gilead. The novel makes a great impression with its scaring but realistic futuristic visions were women are placed into different categories, neither for beauty nor name, but their ability of reproduction. Throughout the novel, one will reflect over the resemblance between our society today and the totalitarian state of Gilead. Secondly, one topic that will be emphasised in The Handmaids Tale, are the different roles of women, before and after the revolution, when comparing them to today’s society. ... This shows how the women in the novel are removed from their possessions, with the purpose of male dominance and the creation of a totalitarian state.
