Debate on the usefullness of philosophy
The debate over the statement, “Philosophy is useless,” sparked many questions by the pro side. The questions raised by the pro side were as follows; 1) If philosophy is so important why isn’t it taught at an elementary level. 2) If philosophy is so useful why do most people who get a philosophy degree end up teaching? 3) If philosophy is so useful why do I not have some understanding of it? 4) Why should one study philosophy when they could study a more specific field? ... When asked why philosophy is not taught at an elementary level even though it is so important, one could argue simply it is to abstract for adolescents to understand. Philosophy is a deep sort of analytical thought that one might only utilize if they are knowledgeable of the subject at hand. ... Philosophy requires one to think outside of the proverbial box. ... When asked why most people who have philosophy degrees only end up teaching, one could point out that many people have philosophy degrees and work in various different aspects of life.
