Issues on Prejudice
Throughout the history of society the issue of prejudice has become very controversial. Prejudice being defined as an adverse opinion formed without just grounds before sufficient knowledge. ... People are prejudice every day. If someone says coffee is nasty without ever tasting it then they are being prejudice toward the coffee. ... The real problem comes when people begin to put their prejudice opinions in the form of hate speech. ... I agree with Rauch that when someone is being prejudice and committing hate speech it shouldn’t be limited and viewed as a totally bad thing because some good can come from it. ... I understand why people may want to put limitations on hate speech which includes bigotry and prejudice and I know how hurtful words can be for some people. ... As an African American growing up in the city of New York in the 1990s, I really didn’t experience prejudice acts that were jeered toward me. ... So because of this incident I understand the emotion that can draw from hate speech, but I still fully agree with Jonathan Rauch and his idea that prejudice isn’t totally wrong. This is because people are able to be more aware of how other people really are and how they truly feel about certain things instead of not ever knowing because they keep their thoughts of prejudice to themselves.
