Comparison Contrast of Eliots The Wasteland and Williams The Yachts
Although the poems "The Wasteland" and "The Yachts" were both written during times of war and depression, they have different meanings to their writers. "The Wasteland" perhaps Eliots most famous work, details the journey of the human soul searching for ressurection and acceptance. ... While "The Yachts" was a product of the downfall of the economy in America during the Great Depression in the 1930s by expressing sympathy for the struggling lower classes. ... The subjects in "The Wasteland" represent the time after the war and Eliots need for acceptance into The church of England. ... "The Yachts" also convey a loss, but it is expressed differently by its subjects. ... The yachts racing in the poem represent the ruling class in America with the "ungoverned sea" that expresses the down fall of our economy during the depression. ... The yachts race right past the struggling people"arms and hands gasping" and throw their bodies to get throught paying no attention to their cries for help. The yachts do not sink, but only finish the race while the poor, lower class is desperate as"the skillful yachts pass over".
