Global Business and Joint Venture
Las Vegas based MGM Mirage is the world’s largest gaming group and recently announced a joint venture with Newcastle United of the UK to launch a new Casino in England. Though it isn’t yet possible to really determine if the experience is either positive or negative, as the effort is underway, it has all of the hallmarks of a positive thing for all parties involved. The reason for this is that the UK is considering deregulation of its gambling laws. Currently, gambling establishments have many rules that may seem strange to an American gambler. For instance, there is no advertising allowed and players must “join” a casino 24-hours before gambling. The reforms currently under consideration, and due to be voted on next year, would eliminate such rules and free up casino’s to operate in a more “Vegas-like” style. This barrier has no doubt kept many gambling powerhouses from fully pursuing multi-million dollar casino construction in the UK in the past.
