... One of the major concerns about television was violence. Television does affect children in a potentially negative way. There are four reports which support the fact that violence on television does potentially affect children negatively, researchers have come up with three ways children are affected, and now people are looking at what can be done. There have been four major reports supporting the fact that violence on television affects children. The violence on television concern was first introduced in 1952 but the first report was not published until 1972. ... The twelve people appointed to study the affects of violence on television consisted of social scientists, professionals in psychiatry and child development, political scientists, and two representatives of the television industry. ... This report concluded, “Violence on television does influence children who view that programming and does increase the likelihood that they will become more aggressive in certain ways. Not all children are affected, not all children are affected in the same way, but there is evidence that TV violence can be harmful to young viewers” (Murray 8). ... The conclusion: Now with ten years of more research, we know that violence on television does affect the aggressive behavior of children—and adults for that matter—and there are many more reasons for concern about violence on television. ... (8) The American Psychological Association task Force on Television conducted the third report and Social Behavior in 1992, which confirmed the harmful effects of TV violence and was later backed up by a report in 1993 done by the American Psychological Association Commission on Violence and Youth (8). There is three main ways children are affected by television violence: Direct effects, Desensitization, and the Mean World Syndrome. Direct effects are defined as a process that “suggests that children and adults who watch a lot of violence on television may become more aggressive and/ or they may develop favorable attitudes and values about the use of aggression to resolve conflicts”(9).
