Sex roles affect sex ratios
After reading chapter 12 in Sociology by Rodney Stark about gender inequality I realized that the gender ratios could have a large affect on the way women and men conduct themselves in relation to each other. ... This chapter mostly went over how sex ratios and sex roles are affected by one another and it also gave detailed examples of how the sex roles theory works. It explained how when men outnumbered women, women were subject to traditional sex roles; whereas when women outnumbered men, women had a lot more freedom. ... It seems that this could be a possibility because as the statistics in the book shows when the sex ratio of people in the United States shifted form more men to more women the women had the feminist movement. What disproves my theory though is that the sex ratio was at 105. ... ” This displays that there is more than just unequal sex ratios going on. Another thing that affects sex roles according to the book is dyadic power. ... One thing that I found to be most interesting is how when sex ratios show more men then women, women were more subject to traditional sex roles. ... This comparison clearly shows the effects of sex ratios on sex roles, but is also good because it deals with two societies at the same time and almost the same place, both being in ancient Greece. ... I would have never seen that sex ratios could affect sex roles like that but after reading and searching further into it I believe it odes have some affect on the way women are treated, unfortunately men even in today’s evolved society women still are oppressed and men almost always hold the power.
