Ray Bradbury is a very interesting author. ... The Illustrated Man and Fahrenheit 451 are great examples of his work. Ray Bradbury was born in Waukegan, Illinois, on August 22, 1920. His father came from a line of editors and publishers, Bradbury & Sons, who came to this country in 1630. ... When Bradbury was 14, the family moved to Los Angeles, California. Bradbury had a fancy for magic, and wanted to become a magician when he grew up. He became interested in writing when he turned seven because of his aunt, Neva Bradbury, who read him Edgar Allen Poe, Wilkie Collins, and the Oz books (Kunitz, 111). Bradbury attended Los Angeles High School. Two of his teachers recognized the greater talent in Bradbury, and encouraged his development as a writer. ... Over 60 years later, Bradbury’s work still bears impressions left by both of these women (Jepson and Johnston, Internet). In 1937, when he was 17, Bradbury Joined the Los Angeles Science Fiction League, through which he published his first work, a short-lived science fiction fan magazine (Mackey, Internet). Bradbury’s real career began during the 1940’s when he wrote for pulp magazines like “Black Mask”, “Amazing stories”, and “Weird Tales” (MacNee, 57). ... This was the first of Bradbury’s professional publications. As well as his short stories and books, Bradbury wrote for both “Alfred Hitchcock Presents” and “The Twilight Zone”. Bradbury has written two musicals, produced dramatic presentations of a number of his novels, and wrote the screenplay for 1953’s Moby Dick (Mackey, Internet). He often blends science fiction with social criticism and writes about the destructive tendency in humans to use technology at the expense of morality (Bradbury, Internet). Five of Bradbury’s novels have been made into major motion pictures. Bradbury was an advisor for the 1963 world’s Fair and he helped design the inside of Disney World’s EPCOT Center: Spaceship Earth. Also, Ray Bradbury has acted as an advisor on city engineering and rapid transit. Even though Bradbury is considered a science fiction writer, he does not just write science fiction. ... Bradbury has won many awards for his work, including the O. ... Today, Bradbury and his wife, Maggie, still live in Los Angeles, but Ray still considers Waukegan, Illinois, his hometown. ... One of his books, Fahrenheit 451 is a story about how futuristic life has made the human race ignorant. ... Faber tells Guy to get copies made of his books, and gives him a small radio to fit in his ear, that can let them talk even when they aren’t near each other. ... Guy reads them some poetry, and when Mildred’s friends leave, Mildred goes to bed while Guy hides the books under the bushes in the backyard before leaving for work. ... Guy gets all the books from the back yard, and plants them in a fireman’s house before going to Faber. ... The men watch the television as the hound who lost Montag’s scent attacks an innocent man. |
