¡°In the novel, R.P McMurphy becomes a symbol of freedom and individuality. Others argue that Nurse Ratched and the Combine win.¡± In the novel One Flew over the Cuckoo¡¯s Nest, R.P McMurphy does become a symbol of freedom and individuality for the patients of the ward. Through McMurphy, most of the men regain the memory of enjoying themselves, being free men, not being ordered around by Nurse Ratched and become an individual. ... In a way however, the combine does beat McMurphy. McMurphy sacrifices himself to the system, the combine and to Nurse Ratched for the men, so the men could live with the realisation that they are men and that they have the right to stick up to Nurse Ratched and to the combine. ... All the men realise with the guidance of McMurphy that a ¡°mental illness could have the aspect of power¡± and all the men practise acting all tough and hard-ass. ... All the men experience this freedom and the contrast of this experience to the imprisonment-feel at the ward is so great that all the man enjoy the feeling of freedom at the maximum extent and do not wish to go back to the grip of the combine and Nurse Ratched.
McMurphy, from the moment he enters the mental institution challenges and rebels against Nurse Ratched and the system. He disrupts Nurse Ratched¡¯s system, which would be running smooth if not for the presence of McMurphy, and so consequently McMurphy loosens the grip of Nurse Ratched and the combine on the patients of the ward.
