Site Design
This book review is based on Jakob Neilsen’s book, “Designing Web Usability”. I have selected Chapter 4, Site Design, but I plan to specifically focus on the following topics: Home Page, Navigation, and Search Engine. ... The outline of this paper is as follows:
• Home Page
• Navigation
• Search Engine
• Practical Application (Amazon.com)
Home Page
The Home Page is the most important page of your entire site. ... The appearance of the page for these latter purposes is less important than its function and usability. A fancy graphic home page that takes a lot of time to download is inappropriate. It should be simple, communicate the purpose and be user friendly in order that visitors can move around the site with little effort.
The author recommends that the Home Page ehould have the following characteristics:
• As the site flagship, it should be designed differently from interior pages
• The home page should not have a “home button” because this is redundant
• The home page should have a larger logo at top, left, or another prominent place
• Tell the user where they are and what the site does
• Highlight new items within the site
• Have navigation directions into site itself
• Be concise and avoid vertical scrolling
• Have a fast download
• Be easy to use
The home page is the first exposure a user has to your site. In order to use your site, examine the contents, get information or make purchases – the user must be able to find the needed information quickly. To this end, the main priority of a home page is the ability to locate the information of interest and to do it as easily as possible.
Jakob Nielsen states that there are the three main features in the design of a Home page. These three features are:
• A directory of site content (navigation feature)
• A summary of the main news and promotions
• A search feature. ...
News and Promotional items make the site current. Many sites will carry these items and appear to go back to the site’s launching. ... A site needs new, news and newness. This will make viewers return to your site frequently. ... Product promotional coupons, for example, can be found on the Walmart web site (Walmart. ...
Navigation
How many times have you been to a site that you just couldnt understand? ... Chances are you havent been back to the site. If the site was marketing a product or service, you probably didnt buy it. ... Good navigation reflects good site structure.
