“Shooting an Elephant” by George Orwell
In the short story, “Shooting an Elephant” by George Orwell, Orwell spends much time explaining the death of the elephant because he really did not want to shoot it. The elephant symbolizes the imperialism of Burma where the story takes place. Orwell is struggling with the conflict between doing the right thing by letting the owner come and retrieve his elephant or killing the elephant to please the crowd.
