As my first Master’s of Business Administration course is coming to an end, I have been learning a lot about myself. During the first workshop, I learned of three different learning styles. These styles are auditory, tactile and visual. Although I possess traits from all three styles, I classify myself primarily as a visual learner followed by a tactile learner. After I understand the qualities of my learning style, I can inventory my strengths, weaknesses and create an improvement strategy for the future. The characteristic that makes me a predominantly visual learner is that I need to physically view a situation before I can completely understand the circumstances. When I learn by listening, I sometimes get lost in the details of the discussion and miss the key points. Louis Phillips, who is a continuing legal education consultant, explains, “Listeners can only be expected to process so much information. And no matter how good a presentation might be, if those hearing it don’t remember anything, nothing has been gained” (Hansen, 2003, p. 26). When I listen a presentation, I get the most out of it if the presenter summarizes their findings through visual tools. My undergraduate education is in engineering; the job of an engineer is to solve problems correctly and cost effectively. During my engineering studies, I benefited from using charts, graphs and flow charts to quantify problems. These visual tools allow me to develop the right questions and enable me to ask the right people. This is the starting point in solving engineering problems. After questioning the proper experts, I try to incorporate my notes into a process flow diagram. I like to use these diagrams to create a strategy for implementing a solution.
