The biology story

It was a hot summer day and H20zzy was swimming around the pond with his H20 friends. As H20zzy was swept up by a current of water, he reached the surface of water and the heat from the sun caused him to separate from the other H20 molecules. The process of evaporation was now in control of H20zzy. On his way up, he noticed many other H20’s coming up with him. As he reached the clouds, he noticed a large mass of H20’s. But they weren’t bonded like in the pond, instead each one was individually floating in the air. Days went by and H20zzy circled randomly in the cloud noticing more and more H20’s arriving. Until one day, when it got really dark and cold, and all the H20’s, including H20ozzy that were suspended, began to fall down towards the ground. H20ozzy arrived at the base of a tomato plant. As H20zzy seeped through the soil, he came to the site of the root hairs. Here the proton pumps were pumping out hydrogens to neutralize the soil. The purpose of this was to take in the minerals the plant needed from a lower concentration to a higher concentration. So active transport must take place, and hydrogens are the carriers which allow the minerals to enter. H20zzy made his way through the root hairs by diffusion. These hairs extended from the epidermal cells. Once inside, he diffused through cell to cell through plasmodesmata. Approaching the endodermal cells, H20zzy had no choice but to pass through them since the casparian strip prevented any other method. Upon passing through the endodermal cells, H20zzy was now facing the large vessels of the phloem and the xylem. The xylem takes the water up to the leaves, and the phloem on the other hand, maintains the glucose and materials needed by the plant in pressurized vessels. As H20zzy was going up the xylem, transpiration, adhesion and cohesion forces were working together to help him make his way to the chlorophylls above. Cohesion helped H20zzy stick together with his other H20’s and adhesion helped him stick to the walls of the xylem. Transpiration was the great force that was bringing all the water upwards. He was now facing the large stacks of thylakoids that were contained in the chlorophyll.
