Yesterday, Today, and Tomorrow Electricity is something that will never end. It will just keep getting bigger and better. It is here to stay. The story of rural electrification begins in darkness and then comes alive in a radiant light of hope and promise, which lives within the human spirit. During the 1930’s, nearly ninety percent of all rural people lived and worked in a dark and powerless land (Childs 16). In May 1935, President Franklin D. Roosevelt created the Rural Electrification Administration that funded the construction of electric lines. Private utilities would not construct these lines with REA loan funds; so many newly organized farmer-owned cooperatives took on the job of constructing these lines (History 2). Men and women worked day and night outlining procedures, obtaining signatures and sign up fees, mapping electric lines, acquiring land easements, and preparing loan applications to REA. They met, they planned, and they created their own cooperative institutions. Line crews cleared rights of way and dug holes. While other workers came behind with the poles and hardware. Last the crews came to string the wire (History 3). In the earliest days, raising a line was very costly and time consuming. The REA began to notice this, and in 1926, they developed assembly line methods for line construction with uniform procedures and standardized types of electrical hardware (History 3).
