“Hey, you know you have sex misspelled on your shoe? Why do you have sex written on your shoe anyway?” I hear that all the time. People see sXe in big, bold, black letters on my shoes or shirt and immediately think it’s another edgy message from Hot Topic. SXe is like shorthand for straightedge, not sexy, like Hot Topic would have people think. I am straightedge, an Xer. I am part of a movement founded in the late 80s hardcore scene in Washington D.C. The basic creed is taken mainly from the song “Straightedge,” by Minor Treat, “Don’t drink/ Don’t smoke/ Don’t f--k,” or no alcohol, no drugs, no promiscuous sex. Being straightedge is a lifetime commitment to these fundamentals. Xer’s are poison free and stay true to themselves. As an Xer, I have the freedom of personal interpretation. I can technically be as lax or as strict and hardline as I want. For example, some hardliners won’t take aspirin or other medications because they are drugs, or even drink orange juice because it is allowed to partially ferment into alcohol. I take Tylenol when my head hurts and I love growers’ style Tropicana. I am still straightedge and so are the hardliners because we are poison free.
