Insanity is a very difficult idea or topic to define. One of the main arguments when dealing with insanity is whether it is created in the minds of the person who become mentally ill, or if the person is pushed by outside forces to the brink of madness. Mrs. Cheneworth from the Modern Persecution, or Insane Asylums Unveiled, and Susanna Kaysen from Girl, Interrupted are two characters who help clarify where insanity comes from. Mrs. Cheneworth is described as a gentle woman with a great deal of honor and self respect. Mrs. Cheneworth seemed to have a perfect life until her stable mental state was destroyed by bad medical treatment, and she would eventually loose her sanity due a battle with opium while in a horrendous physical state. It is important to note that Mrs. Cheneworth took her own life because she was driven to desperation. Elizabeth Packard believes that she became a victim to the medical world because they used poison instead of nature to cure the disease.
