Andy Warhol adopted a different approach from the prevailing tradition of the 1950’s (Abstract Expressionism) and in doing so paved the way for the development of Post-Modernism. Andy Warhol was the first artist to introduce what was a strange idea back then known as ‘Pop Art’. ... Peter Blake, for example, designed album covers for Elvis Presley and the Beatles and placed film stars such as Brigitte Bardot in his pictures in the same way that Andy Warhol was immortalizing Marilyn Monroe in the USA. ... “They always say that time changes things, but you actually have to change them yourself” commented Andy Warhol (Mathews, 1995: 67)
Andy Warhol was born in Cleveland, Ohio, studied at the Carnier Institute of Technology in Pittsburgh, Pennyslvannia. He began his career as a commercial artist; Warhol decided to devote himself to a more serious form of art work, when his friends in the fashion industry expressed a strong interest in American art. Andy Warhol began as a commercial illustrator, and a very successful one, doing jobs like shoe ads for I. ... At the time however, Warhol did not wok this out. ... Warhol extended it by using silk screen, and not bothering to clean up the imperfections of the print: those slips of the screen, uneven inking of the roller, and general graininess. ...
Through a lifetime of creative work encompassing paintings, films, drawings, music production, sculpture and commercial work, Warhol maintained a relevant and vital link to the emerging present. Andy Warhol certainly was the key figure in changing the direction Art in the 1950’s was heading, opening up new windows of opportunity and in doing so paved the way for the development of Post Modernism.
