Robert Bateman was born on May 24, 1930 in Toronto, Ontario. His house was adjacent to the Forest Hill area, which provided him with ample opportunity to observe nature from a very early age. He knew by the time he was 12 that he would become an artist when he grew up, and took an interest in conservation. Bateman’s early influences were Ernest Thompson-Seton, Roger Tory Peterson and the naturalist painter John James Audubon. He did occasionally paint Cubist, Impressionism and Abstract Expressionism works at this time.
