Achilles and Penthesileia
Although I never would have believed it a month ago, the puzzling question of wether Exekias painted a pot portraying the battle of Achilles and Penthesileia, has fallen into my lap. ... Although Achilles has a dominating slanted stance and is trying to pierce Penthesileia’s shield, she is in an equally sufficient defensive position deflecting the blow with her shield. ... Achilles is piercing the neck of his combatant as she slouched down in a submissive position. ... The angle that is made by Achilles body is the exact same in both paintings. ... This angle is stopped however by the horizontal positioning of Penthesileia’s spear that is held waist high in an attack on Achilles. ...
Although Exekias is known for his heavy overlapping as in pot B, there is still adequate overlapping in pot A with the shields of both figures and the arm of Achilles to prove that this painter was adequate in the skill as Exekias was. ... The space between is partially filled with an almost full viewing of Achilles shield overlapped with the shield of his opponent thereby reducing the amount of wasted space. ... The only difference is in pot A she was able to ward of Achilles counter attack, while in pot B she was not as lucky.
The uniform which Achilles wears in both pots is nearly identical with rounded lines covering his thighs, an outline over his abs, and a spiral over his chest area.
