A Worn Path
A Worn Path by Eudora Welty soaks readers into a world of social conflict, racism, duty, guilt, and love. It shows the trials and tribulations that one grandmother must face in a society that is not ready for her attitude of independence. Phoenix Jackson, a very elderly and fragile black woman, is walking a path that she has sauntered many times before. “She carried a thin, small cane made from an umbrella, and with this she kept tapping the frozen earth in front of her” (Welty 86). Although she carries this so-called cane, and her sight is not clear, Phoenix has traveled this route so habitually, she knows it all to well. Due to her sixth sense, she can let her mind wander in all directions, and still reach her destination. She encounters many hardships, whether it comes from her own mind, or the outside world. A lifetime of privation has developed with her as she is a black women living in a white world.
