a dolls house

Ibsen uses symbolism to present the inner life of the central character Nora Helmer in his play “A Doll’s House.” It is common in naturalistic plays for there to be some sort of ‘secret’ that only the audience is privy to. This is evident in “A Doll’s House”, through Nora’s concealment of her borrowed money and forged signature, which is symbolic of Nora’s inner life. It is through this use of symbolism that the audience becomes aware of the inner conflict in the character of Nora.
