The family is the most important aspect of this novel, Bulibasha is the head of the family and nobody dares to defy his law expect as we are shown Simoen who defies Bulibaha’a authority at every opportunity that he gets. For example when he tries to stop Bulibasha from beating his Grandmother and gets a beating himself. ... Bulibasha is deeply religious, owing all he has to God after the encounter with the American angel which acted as his guide to begin shearing which in turn lead to his family becoming one of the best known shearing companies in New Zealand. ... Brains and intelligence are not important to Bulibasha and feels that Simoens growing intelligence is corrupting him. ... Simeon does not understand or agree with this and this is main source of tension between himself and Bulibasha “We’re not here because of honour, we’re here because the others in the family are older and have been given land and there’s none left for us. ... This is shown when Simoen gets his school certificate results back; having done well and Bulibasha had been told about it, he expects a little praise. ... The fact that Bulibasha and Simoen are in fact much the same in sprit is both surprising and not surprising due to their intense competitiveness and pride both hold.
