Since The Ballet Russes first tour here, ballet in Australia has been trying to adapt to and attract the public. ... This piece will discuss how ballet in Australia has attempted to maintain its place in society through out its history.
When the Ballets Russes first toured Australia, there was a mutual attraction between the company and Australians. While Australians admired the companys elegance, beauty, etc…, the Ballet Russes raved about Australia, believing it to be exotic and exciting. Their relationship was so successful that when the ballet finally did ship home after an extended season, many company members decided to stay behind. A large factor of their reasoning was to avoid the war in Europe at the time, but their love of Australia would obviously have made it an easy decision to make. Among the people who remained was the founder of the Western Australian Ballet, Kira Abrikoriva and Edward Borovansky who would end up creating the next major source of ballet in Australia, but this time it would be a major company of our own. It was also to be the predecessor to our current major ballet company, The Australian Ballet.

While Australia had a company that they could call their own and had certain ballets which were created and inspired by Australia, the repertoire was becoming somewhat tedious for its audience, which is perhaps why, during its second decade, the Borovansky Ballet presented a number of full-length ballets from international classical repertoire, such as Swan Lake, The Sleeping Princess, Nutcracker and many shorter works from choreographers of international status.
