Birth of Woman

... Certain stories, specifically the biblical Eve in Genesis, and Pandora in Greek mythology, do not exactly celebrate the creation of man’s counterpart, woman. The main comparison between the two is that in each tale, woman is held accountable for the evils of the world, and for the mortality of humans. And while these two mythological women are often grouped together, the creation of a robot woman in Fritz Lang’s 1927 science fiction film, Metropolis, bears an even more striking resemblance to the creation of Pandora than Eve originally did. In this film, a robot is created for the same reasons as Pandora, and the conclusions of each seem to be the same too, that woman is not solely responsible for the fall of man; for man, woman, and creator all possess the same flaws. ... Both stories contain their own version of the forbidden fruit, being either Eve’s apple, or Pandora’s jeweled box, which lead to the ultimate loss of innocence and perfection, and each woman cannot resist temptation, while at the same time being an object of temptation herself. ... This evil is woman, Pandora. ...
In Metropolis, a woman is also created as a punishment, and as a means to an end. John Frederson, the master of Metropolis, becomes angered with the male workers in his factories for their fascination with a young woman named Maria, who inspires hope in them that a mediator will come to save them from the harsh inequalities between the social classes. He employs his conspirator, Rotwang, just as Zeus does with Hephaestus, to create a robot woman exactly in Maria’s likeness.
