“In Good Faith” Salman Rushdie writes that for many writers and intellectuals there is a quest is to seek out the answers to dangerous or difficult questions. Rushdie states in his article that he holds a strong loyalty to novelists that “attempt radical reformulations of language, form and ideas”, also he speaks of his “determination to create a literary language and literary forms in which the experience of formerly colonized, still-disadvantaged peoples might find full expression. ... ” Rushdie asserts that the novel deals with the role of the artist in society, he sees the artist as one who disrupts the commonplace. ... Rushdie presents the rebellious, uncompromising figure of the artist, and criticizes and abuses the masses for their heedless acceptance of one man’s, or institution’s, vision of reality. ... Accordingly, in defence of Salman Rushdie’s artistic freedom he cannot be held accountable for a reckless disregard for the religious sentiments of millions of people. However one might argue that people should have the right to have their religious attitudes respected, nevertheless it is convincingly arguable that Rushdie has committed no crimes of heresy for the reason that artistic freedom is absolute. This basically sums up the thoughts of Rushdie whilst writing in “In Good Faith” that he believed he wrote under the impression that he was a free man.
