The characteristics of each role in the Canterbury Tales is portrayed through the actors’ physical and vocal accentuations. I chose to recount those qualities in The Clerk of Oxford and the Squire. Both of these characters took part in at least one of the tales told in the play. I felt their objectives in each character part were distinct and comprehensible. They listened and accepted each others presence when taking part in a tale together, as well as the presence of the other pilgrims. The Clerk of Oxford, played by Scott Z. Cooper, portrays Nicholas in the Miller’s Tale. His past experiences in theater emerge through his performance in this play. His physical movements are very intense, while his emotions generate his actions. He expresses the thoughts and emotions of the Clerk to the audience and progressively creates an aura of wonder as to what is to occur. Scott portrays sentiment through his voice and speech.
