Christian Symbolism
Early Christian art was more than decorative works to please the eye. This was often the only way to educate others in the Christian faith. To hide the Christian meaning, Christians used the motifs of the cultures they lived with. What was a common art feature to the unbeliever became the hidden language of the Christians. Some of these symbols are recognizable and in use today. The symbols of the fish and dove are a common example of this. Early pagans used the fish in art for decorative purposes and the dove represented the freed spirit. Christians have given both of these symbols greater meaning.
