The observation that 'The cat sat on the mat' is a common one. However, this is rarely articulated in the present tense, as in 'The cat sits on the mat', or indeed in the future tense, as in, 'The cat will sit on the mat'. Some catologists have argued that this is due to the fact that present tense articulations would have to be observed at the precise point in time that the cat was actually on top of a given mat.
