The purest Art Nouveau architecture can be found in the works of Antonio Gaudi, in Barcelona, where his building Casa Batllo became a fusion of organic based from and structure, incorporating influences such as Arabic and Catalonian traditions. Almost as soon as the house was completed, it was dubbed ‘La Casa dels Ossos’ ‘the House of Bones’, because of the curvilinear stone columns resembling bone. ... Casa Batllo (1906) reflects this intense yet abstract naturalism. ... One Gaudi scholar, Philippe Thiebaut, has even suggested that the rooms of the Batllo apartment unfold like a process of cellular growth. ... Gaudi wanted the Casa Batllo to be read as a symbolic paean to the legend of saint George, in his victory over the dragon. ... So it is a work of ostentatious piety as well as luxury, a conjunction that Batllo clearly approved of, since he also had a private shine, with a Holy Family painted by Joseph Llimona installed behind a screen in the main salon.
