“The Importance of Being Earnest” is regarded as being a comedy play and during this essay I will be exploring some of the means in which Wilde induces humour into the play in act one.
The first method of establishing humour by Wilde is his typical style of role reversal. Wilde’s humour is very witty in a sense that he uses what the characters say and reverses it into a humorous tone. ... ” This is an example of what the audience does not expect therefore makes it humorous yet at the same time this a typical style of Wilde.
Wilde created Algernon and other characters in act one with a humorous characterisation. ... Wilde embeds humorous characterisation and the way he achieves this is by adding role reversal to their speeches to give a comedic impact to the audience. ... ” Wilde adds witty comments as such during a flow of speech and then carries on with the sentence, which is normal speech. As we can see after making a paradoxical comment Algernon speaks of dinner “Now, my dear boy, if we want to get a good table at Willis’s we must go and dress.
