|
Tragedy is fundamentally a serious play. It presents a character in admirable ways. The character faces a moral issue. The issue is not peculiar to him, but, it is one which any man may have to face - an universal issue. The protagonist will wrestle with these forces, but he cannot hope to win over them, and ultimately he is defeated. Our realization that the protagonist is the victim of a superior force arouses our pity.
