View of Volterra
Jean-Baptiste-Camille Corot
62 5/8“ x 47”
Timken Museum of Art
Oil on Canvas
Jean-Baptiste-Camille Corot (1796-1875) was born into a turbulent French society smelling of revolt. Because of wealthy parents and a trust fund he would live off while a young adult, Corot was able to cast away commercial art and instead pursue his passion—landscapes.
Corot enjoyed touring Europe. It was on his 1834 trip to the Tuscan countryside in Italy that Corot gathered sketches for his oil on canvas painting View of Volterra found in the Timken Museum of Art, in Balboa Park. Since Corot preferred to paint from sketches in his studio, his paintings do not depict precise reality. ... This could perhaps be the view of Corot in his escapist mentality of painting pristine landscapes in the face of social upheaval and industrialization.
