What is butoh? Butoh is a Japanese dance form that originated after World War II (Hermon, Dan). It is a dance form in which many would consider as aberrant and is not of their liking. ... Hijikata despised the Japanese modern dance scene and felt that it was just an imitation of the works done from the west (McLeod). He wanted to find a unique dance form that can be represented and expressed as a Japanese dance form on its own (McLeod). So then he created the form Ankoku Butoh or better known as the Dance of Darkness.
Hijikata’s early public performances were wildly and sexually explicit that it had shocked the Japanese dance community, and resulted in the banning of his appearance in future organized events (McLeod). His rebellious courage to go against his cultures dance form and create his own, has pushed the Japanese dance art to evolve into something that’s not particular. Hijikata developed a dance that distorted the body, and moved slowly on bent legs which is not like traditional idea of the beautiful body, but instead a more natural body (McLeod). ... This is the type of dance form that Hijikata wanted to inspire among his collogues.
Hijikata discovered this form of dance in the harsh climate of Northern Japan within the area of Tohoku (McLeod). ... He broke away from the so called traditional “perfect” upright bodies of western dance and made his own dance that involved the truthful and ritualistic form of dance (McLeod).
