I woke to find myself lying in the snow, pressed up against the wreck of my 27-year-old cousin Alison's Ford LTD. The last thing I remembered was riding in the front with Alsion, her three kids--Carlos, 8; Christopher, 4; and Kayla, 3--nestled between us, listening to a Britney Spears tape as we drove to Alison's friend's house, just over the mountains. Now, as I looked around, I saw the car tilted against a tree, which had stopped us partway down an 11,000-foot mountain.
