The foundations for Japanese influence in twentieth century art stretches far back into Japan’s Edo period (1603-1868). With trade restricted to the Netherlands and what’s now called modern day China, this prolonged period of isolationism kept Japan at a distance from foreign ideas, and the country did not develop along with the European Renaissance. Accordingly, tradition survived well, and when Japan was virtually forced into a free trade environment circa 1854 by American ships carrying diplomats, there was inevitably going to be many expressions of a unique Eastern culture never seen before by foreigners. ...
The biggest expressions of Japanese art influence in the early twentieth century were in the impressionist movement, which was coming to end by this era, and in the art deco period, which peaked in the 1920s. ...
Philippe Burty created the term Japonisme in 1876 to refer to the influence of Japanese ideas on Western artists, particularly from ukiyo-e; woodcut prints that were a cheap and easily available medium, and treated in much the same manner as modern newspapers are as a packaging material.
