The work I have chosen By Hockney, titled “ Nicholas Wilder” is an early work which happens to be just one of a number of experimental photographs produced by Hockney in the early 1980’s.
All of these photographs are renown by followers of Hockney as having some great clandestine meaning
And are constantly dissected by art critics to which David Hockney responds,
“All in all, the photograph, and reality, are being called into question. ... ”
“Nicholas Wilder”produced in 1982 is a portrait principally, but it is also a presentation of a technique of photomontage that was quite unique for the time, the photograph is made up of a number of Polaroid photographs fourteen by eight respectively, all in all 112 Polaroid snapshots. ... Both being known influences on David Hockney, we can also detect distinct similarities to the cubist movement. ...
The character “Nicholas Wilder” is seated in the image, in what appears to be taken in the garden or outdoors someplace, the subject is placed centrally in the picture with his legs crossed, head down, reading a book, something of interest to me which is already present is the undertone of the cubist style and Hockeny’s influence by Picasso.
Although David Hockney has said it, he has a deep interest in the works of Vincent Van Gogh, it was Pablo Picasso’s influence which is obvious through his blatant use of in some regards cubism.
