Many of the techniques used in movies are not just for general viewing use; however, they are used to create a deeper meaning within the story itself. Lighting and camera angles are some of the more prominent effects used to create a deeper atmosphere and meaning to a movie. The movie The Matrix uses lighting and camera angles to depict a dominance and fear of the technology they are fighting. For many people the darkness of a shadowed area defines a place where one might hide or perform shady business. The main character ‘Neo’ in The Matrix dwells in a lowly lit dim apartment building. This instantly positions us to the fact that Neo is a mysterious character to begin with. There is something unknown about him. It raises questions about his character and grabs your attention right away to whether or not if the character of Neo character is going to succeed. As well, when Neo travels to meet Trinity for the first time he meets her in a dark secluded corner of a club away from any people. “A low key dimly lit scene denotes a suggestion of fear, an inexplicable evil or even that of the unknown,” (Giannetti 82). Every human that knows where they actually are in The Matrix notably stays away from anywhere that would be highly lit, if at all possible; this seems to be quite the opposite than normal, since brightly lit places usually describe safety to the viewer. Rarely in this movie is that followed. From these characters shying away from the light we instantly receive the message that something is not quite right, that an outside presence is waiting.
